Medical Transcription for the Military Spouse

As a military spouse, you provide a service to our country that we would like to thank you for doing. We believe the military spouse is the unsung hero in our country. When your spouse is deployed, you have to keep the home going alone and still find ways to manage to financially contribute to your household. Medical transcription may be a good choice for you to consider.

Why is Medical Transcription a Good Career Choice for the Military Spouse?

The US Department of Defense and the US Department of Labor have worked together to gather information about portable careers in an effort to assist military spouses in finding the right career opportunities. Medical transcription has been identified as one of those career choices. Medical transcriptionists often work from home and many times, they work for a national transcription company. That means if you have an internet connection and a computer, you can take your work with you wherever you go. No more searching for a new position when your family is transferred.

When you are able to stay with one employer for an extended period of time, your chance of advancement in the company improves. Medical transcription provides this and gives you an opportunity for career advancement in your new profession.

It may mean you have some financial assistance in getting the training that can make a difference for you and your family. You can see our directions on how to apply for CAA funding here.

Hear From Our Students:

Sarah, Army Wife:

>I am an Army wife and mother of 4 small children. I already had an education in sports medicine, but with the high cost of childcare and commuting, it was just not financially beneficial for me to work in that field. When I decided to further my education, I explored many options, but kept coming back to medical transcription. I knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but between constant year-long deployments, moves and all of the other things Army life throws at us, I didn’t want to spend my career establishing myself in a workplace only to have to do the same again in a few years. As I carefully researched my options, I quickly realized that Andrews was the best choice for me.

>During my education at Andrews I had constant support from my instructors and the staff. Within the first few weeks of working as a medical transcriptionist, I felt that my education at Andrews had been tailored just for the job I was doing. I was incredibly well prepared in all aspects of the job, from using research tools efficiently to my knowledge of technology we use on the job.

I have now been working for almost 6 months. I work for a large national company in acute care. I do work a specific schedule, but my company is flexible for me. If I have an appointment, I am able to work that time later in the day so that I can be where I need to be. When my husband is on TDY, I can move my hours to times that the children are at school or asleep. When I approached my employer about an upcoming PCS, there was no hesitation when they told me taking the time off to get moved will not be a problem and my job will be waiting for me. I will move and not lose my accumulated paid time off or other benefits!

As an enlisted family, my income has been life changing for us. My expectations of what attending Andrews would do for me have been far exceeded. I am still working in healthcare, I am at home for my family and my job goes with me when they Army says it is time to call a new base home. I feel like I have the best of both worlds!

How do I Enroll?

As part of our enrollment process, we have provided a screening test to help determine whether potential students have some of the skills necessary to succeed in this field. It isn't a definitive test, but it does help us guide students toward the right career choice. Your first step in the enrollment process is the take the screening. You can find that test by following this link. Results of the screening test should be returned to you by email within 3 working days. *Please note that if you use a spam blocker, or if your email account is full, you may not receive this email. Please note that we will not grade and return the entire test to you. We will provide an overview with general comments and recommendations. Tests with no name at the top of the message body will not be evaluated. Do NOT use reference books or materials. Please proofread your work carefully. It is necessary for applicants to pass this test prior to enrollment. Those who receive a failing grade may request an opportunity to retest after a three-month period of time.*
